Are you a Lincoln-based creative struggling to find affordable places to work in?

Do you yearn for a yurt where you can write?*

Are you pining for a place in which to paint?

Or are you just fed up of having to channel the muse in your grandma’s shed?

If you are looking for your own space to innovate, create and connect with other artists, then spaceREC might be the answer.

(* N.B. There are no yurts currently involved in the project. The yearn/yurt rhyme was just too good to miss. Sorry.)

What is spaceREC?

Run by General Practice in Lincoln and East Street Arts in Leeds spaceREC is an art commission for 1215.today by Kathrin Böhm to open up more free public and private spaces for creative meetings, events or whatever amazing thing you want to do.

As digital social realms are increasing, actual public spaces are decreasing. The rising cost of space means that many artists can no longer afford to work in a studio. spaceREC aims to create new networks of creative spaces both online and in our cities to help artists find places to work.

Maps

General Practice is developing a list of spaces in Lincoln which can be used by artists for public and collective events to make a creative community beyond the walls of the private production space. We need the physical spaces of our cities to come together, share the culture we make and to shape a creative scene.

We also have a Leeds map of creative spaces:

Sounds

The growing spaceREC Soundcloud is fed with sounds from creative workspaces and studios, be it a metal workshop, the bedroom as recording studio, a music school or the painter’s studio.

The sound of where and how we work might be familiar to ourselves, but strange and unusual to others. The way we normally share our more private spaces online is through posting photos and videos. spaceREC uses sound recordings as a way to share private creative spaces and combine them in a larger soundscape to build a collective aural space.
